Marching Band
Survival Tips
Sun Protection
  • Sunscreen is HIGHLY recommended
  • Lip balm with SPF protection is also highly recommended

Apparel
  • Students should wear shorts for all outdoor rehearsals. Non-cotton shorts are the most comfortable in the heat. Athletic shorts work extremely well for marching band.
  • Students should wear short sleeved t-shirts that are lighter in color and light-weight.
  • Students will need a few predominantly red t-shirts to wear at rehearsals once school starts.
  • Tennis shoes are required for the marching band activity. Cross trainer/running-type shoes are best.
  • Sunglasses and a hat are strongly encouraged

Nutrition
  • Students are required to bring water to every marching band rehearsal.
  • A water jug that hold at least a half-gallon of water is necessary.
  • Students are required to have a Dawson Band water jug for games and competitions.
  • Liquids other than water are prohibited.
  • Students should keep in mind that they will spend 3-4 hours outside for rehearsals when they make food choices.
  • Students need to eat breakfast before any morning rehearsals. Milk and dairy products do not work well in the heat.
  • Students should minimize their intake of sodas and other sugary drinks. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated will allow students to fare better outside.
  • Once school starts, a student's lunch choice can greatly effect how they feel outside after school. Plan wisely!

The health and safety of our students is the top priority of the Dawson band and guard staff. We will stop for water every 10-15 minutes throughout the season. It is very important that students hydrate themselves at every water break.
